2021 年に実施された北海道大学の英語入試問題には、英文読解問題が 4 つある。
第 1 問は、この現実が仮想空間ではなく、本当に現実かどうかを疑う英文である。有名な映画 The Matrix (1999年) を例にして、宇宙のどこかで非常に発達した文明を持つ生物が、地球上の人類を仮想空間に閉じ込める可能性を論じている。
第 2 問は、政府が個人生活に介入するほうが良いのかどうかを問う英文である。問題文では、賛否両論を取り上げている。
第 3 問は、大学ではいつも問題になる教養科目の問題である。大学に教養科目が必要であるかどうか。問題文では、教養科目を学んで成功している人物を挙げて、教養科目の重要性を説いている。
第 4 問は、会話文である。有名人の話を聞いて、睡眠時間を削り、極端な食事をしている同僚に、注意をする話である。
