Attentional Filter について (Attentional Filter)

　"attentional filter" という言葉は、2016 年実施の一橋大学の英語入試問題で初めて知った。私が最初に考えたのは、人間はすべてのことに注意を向けることは不可能なので、情報を選択的に選んでいるというものであった。インターネットや辞書で、この語を調べてみたが、掲載されていなかった。

　Encyclopedia Britannica で検索してみたが、"attentional filter" ではヒットしなかった。"attention" と "filter" に関連する論文は沢山あった。おそらくその文献を詳細に調査すれば、"attentional filter" が論文の中に存在するかもしれない。

　2016 年実施の一橋大学の英語入試問題では、まず現在の人間が処理すべき情報量の大きさに言及している。

Information scientists have measured all this: in 2011, Americans took in five times as much information every day as they did in 1986―the equivalent of 175 newspapers.

(訳) 情報科学者は、これらすべてを計算してきた。すると、2011 年には、アメリカ人は 1986 年の 5 倍もの情報を取り入れていた。それは 175 枚の新聞記事に匹敵するものであった。

　このような多量の情報を処理する能力を人間は持っているが、そのために犠牲を払うこともある。

Our brains do have the ability to process the information we take in, but at a cost: we can have trouble separating the trivial from the important, and all this information processing makes us tired.

(訳) 私たちの脳は、取り入れる情報を処理する能力は持っているが、それには代償を払うことになる。私たちは重要な情報と取るに足りない情報を区別することができないこともあり、すべての情報処理は、私たちを疲労させる。

　また人間の情報処理能力の速さ (the information speed limit) には限界があるので、二人の人間が話していることを情報処理するだけで人は精一杯である。だから、次のような状況に陥ることになる。

We're surrounded on this planet by billions other humans, but we can understand only two at a time at the most! It's no wonder that the world is filled with so much misunderstanding.

(訳) 私たちは何十億という人々に囲まれて生活しているが、精々、一度に二人の人が話していることしか理解できない。だから世界中で誤解が溢れていることは、何の不思議もない。

　問題英文の最後から二番目の節で、やっと "attentional filter" の説明が出てくる。注意力はすべての生物の基本的な能力であるが、それには数百万のニューロンが関与することになる。この情報には私も驚かざるを得ない。

For this to happen, millions of neurons are constantly monitoring the environment to select the most important things for us to focus on. These neurons are collectively called the attentional filter.

(訳) これが起こるためには、数百万というニューロンが絶えず環境を監視して、集中すべき重要な物事を選択しているのである。これらのニューロンは、集合的に「注意フィルター」と呼ばれている)

　情報処理のために、私たちの脳は絶えず働いていることになる。そこで頭脳に時折休息を与える必要があるが、それには情報を遮断する必要があるのではないだろうか。数百万のニューロンが絶えず周囲の状況を監視している事実は、現代人が脳疲労に陥りやすいことの原因を明らかにしてくれる。
