性差別言語とAI (Gendered Language and AI)

　2021 年実施の学習院大学法学部 (後期日程) の英語入試問題は、性差別言語の研究に AI が大いに役立つことを論じているものである。

　まず性差別言語は、どのようなものであり、それと社会がどのような関係にあるかを、Roxana Lupu の言葉を借りて説明している。

“Gendered language is understood as language that has a bias towards a particular gender and reflects and maintains pre-existing social distinctions,” explains Roxana Lupu, an expert in applied linguistics. It shows us two things―not only does it “signal the presence of sexism in society”, but it also “strengthens those beliefs and perceptions”.

(訳)「性差別言語は、特定の性別に偏った言葉であり、既存の社会的な区別を反映し維持するものと捉えられている」と、応用言語学の専門家であるロクサーナ・ルプが説明しています。これは 2 つのことを示しています。社会における性差別の存在を「示す」だけでなく、それらの信念と認識を「強化」もしているのである。

　次に Roxana Lupu は性差別言語が世間が使用されるかどうかについては、メディアの役割が大きいと指摘する。しかし性差別言語を研究するには、多くの情報が存在するために困難である。そこで人工知能(AI) が登場することになる。

Lupu believes the media plays a fundamental role in the use of gendered language among the population. “We need to raise awareness to drive change,” she says. But raising awareness is complicated by a lack of information on just how big the problem is. That’s where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in.

(訳) ルプは、メディアが人々の間で性差別言語の使用に基本的な役割を果たしていると考えている。「変化を促すためには、意識を高める必要がある」と彼女は述べている。しかし、問題の大きさについての情報が不足しているため、意識を高めることは複雑なものとなっている。そこで人工知能（AI）が登場することになる。

　言語分析に特化しているテクノラジー企業である Deviance が開発したソフトウェアを使用すると、女性と男性に関する表現での言語的差異が明確になってくる。

Using a technique known as comparative linguistics (where two data sets are analysed in relation to one another), Deviance’s software would enable them to analyse in a detailed way any linguistic differences in the way men ana women are described in the source material.

(訳)「比較言語学」として知られる手法を使用して（2 つのデータをセットにして互いに関連付けて分析する手法）、Deviance のソフトウェアは、男性と女性が資料で、どのように描写されているかの言語的な違いを詳細に分析することが可能になる。

　膨大な資料が存在する性差別言語の研究には、AI の活用は欠かせない手法である。人間では到底処理できない大量の資料でも、AI の力を借りれば簡単に処理してくれる。

　人間は躊躇することなく AI の力を借りるべきであろうと、Roxana Lupu も論じている。下に挙げた英文中の Wilson とは Rich Wilson のことで、彼は Deviance の所有者である。

More than anything, the study demonstrates how AI can raise our awareness of the problem of gendered language: the first step to addressing the problem. The media has a responsibility to contribute to an equal society,” says Lupu. For Wilson, "If AI can help to highlight a path to progress, then we should grasp that opportunity with both hands.”
