第二次大戦後の日本とアメリカ (Japan and America after World War II)

　

　2021 年の今日、中国が強大な国家となり、アメリカと対抗しているときに、終戦後のアメリカと日本の関係を振り返ってみることも面白い。

　2016 年に実施された慶応義塾大学 (法学部) の英語入試問題に、当時の日本とアメリカの関係を描いた論説がある。そこにはアメリカの文化や豊富な物質に憧れる日本人の姿が活写されている。

　まず日本人はアメリカのファッションや映画に大きな影響を受けた。

While many Japanese were apprehensive about their country's strategic ties with the United States, American fashion, American pop music, American movies, and American brands continued to mesmerize the Japanese customer, and public-opinion polls continued to rank the United States at or near the top of the list of "most respected/admired countries" in the world.

(訳) アメリカ合衆国と結んだ戦略的な絆について、多くの日本人が懸念している間に、アメリカのファッション、アメリカのポピュラー音楽、アメリカ映画、アメリカのブランドが、日本人消費者を魅了し続けた。そして世論調査では、アメリカは世界中で「最も尊敬し称賛する」国のトップかそれに近い順位にあげられ続けている。

　しかし1950 年代に反アメリカの感情が沸き起こってきた。それはアメリカが日本を冷戦の道具にしたからである。

During the 1950s there was a burst of anti-American sentiment, particularly among intellectuals on the left, who were disappointed that the United States had chosen to turn Japan into a Cold War client state.

(訳) 1950 年代に、特に左翼の知識人の間で、反アメリカの感情が噴出した。彼らはアメリカ合衆国が日本を冷戦の隷属国に変えたことに失望した。

　第二次大戦後にアメリカを訪れた日本人は、幸せな思い出ばかりではなくとも、新鮮なアメリカのイメージを持って、日本に帰国した。

Not all Japanese travelers came home happy with their experiences, and not everyone came back pro-American, but on balance they all came back with fresh views of life in America that were more concrete, and less homogeneous than prewar perceptions and more grounded in social reality.

(訳) すべての日本人旅行者が、楽しい経験をして帰国したわけではなかったし、すべての人が親米家になって帰ってきたわけでもない。しかし全体的に考えてみると、戦前の理解より具体的で、よりバラエティに富み、より社会現実に根差した、アメリカ生活への新鮮な考え方を持って、日本人旅行者は帰国した。

　戦前の日本人は、アメリカの一部しか見なかったが、終戦後にアメリカを訪問した日本人は、アメリカにおける地域格差、階級格差、文化の多様性に気付いた。

Postwar visitors went everywhere, and for the first time their accounts of the country highlighted regional differences, class differences, and cultural diversities that had escaped notice before. The search for and American essence continued, but it proved as elusive as ever.

(訳) 終戦後の日本人訪問者はアメリカのいたるところに行き、初めて、彼らのアメリカ解説が、以前には注目されなかった、地域格差、階級格差、文化の多様性を浮き彫りにした。アメリカの核心への探究は続いているが、以前と同じようにとらえどころがないことが分かった。

　日本人は今でもアメリカからの影響を強く受けているが、徐々にアメリカばかりではなく、全世界を見ている人々が多くなってきているように思える。歴史を時々振り返り、現状を見直すことは重要なことである。
