Paracosm について

　2021年実施の慶応義塾大学(文学部)の入試問題に paracosm という聞きなれない言葉が出題されていた。

　私がよく使う竹林滋『新英和大辞典』第六版 (研究社、2002年) や Concise Oxford English Dictionary Twelfth Edition (Oxford University Press, 2011) や Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English Ninth Edition (Oxford University Press, 2015) にはこの単語は載っていない。ブリタニカでこの単語を入力しても出てこなかった。

　ネットでこの単語を検索すると、https://ja.powerthesaurus.org/paracosm/definitions というサイトで "a prolonged fantasy world invented by children; can have a definite geography and language and history" という定義が見つかった。訳してみると「子供によって創られた長く続く空想世界、明確な地理、言語、歴史を有することもある」。この定義は分かりやすく、大体の概念を理解することができる。

　2021 年実施の慶応義塾大学(文学部) の入試問題には paracosm を 次のように説明している。

Paracosms are imaginary societies rather than imaginary people. They are invented universes with distinctive languages, geography, and history.

(訳) 仮想宇宙とは想像された人物ではなく、想像された社会である。それらは明確な言語、地理、歴史を有する創造された宇宙である。

　この後の文章で、ブロンテ姉妹がこの paracosm を複数持っていたと記述が続く。

　大学受験生はこのような新しい言葉に時々入試問題で出くわすので、常に日本語でも英語でも様々な書物を読んでおく必要がある。このようなことを考えたこともない受験生にとってこの問題はかなり難しいと想像される。慶応義塾大学の文学部を受験しようとする学生は、これくらいの世界は熟知しているはずと試験問題出題者は考えているかもしれない。
