テンプル大学創立者 Russell Conwell (Russell Conwell, the founder of Temple University)

　2021 年実施の成蹊大学文系英語入試問題に、テンプル大学の創始者であるラッセル・コンウェルのことが説明されていた。恥ずかしながら、私はこの入試問題を読んで、初めてテンプル大学の創設のいきさつを知った。大学の教員を 40 年間勤めたが、外国の大学についてはほとんど無知であったことが恥ずかしい。

　ラッセル・コンウェルがテンプル大学を作ろうと決心したのは、貧しい若者が大学教育を受けたいが、金がないという相談を受けたことから始まった。

One day, a young man came to him and told him he wanted a college education but couldn’t afford it. Dr Conwell decided, at that moment, what the new purpose of his life was to be. He decided that he would establish a university for poor and disadvantaged but deserving students. Dr Conwell did have a challenge, however; he would need a great deal of money to build a university. But for him―and anyone with real purpose in life―nothing could stand in the way of his goal.

(訳) ある日、一人の青年が彼のところにやってきて、大学教育を受けたいが、大学に通う金銭的余裕がないと言った。コンウェル博士は、その瞬間、自分の人生の新しい目的が何であるかを決定した。彼は、貧しく恵まれないが、ふさわしい学生のための大学を設立することを決意した。しかし、コンウェル博士には難題があった。大学を建てるには莫大な資金が必要だったのである。しかし、彼にとって、そして人生の真の目的を持つ人にとってもそうだが、彼の目標を阻むものは何もなかった。

　アフリカに住むある農民が、ダイヤモンドを探して農地を売って、世界中をさまよったがついに発見できなくて、皮肉なことに彼が売った農地にダイヤモンドがあったという実話を、アメリカ中で話して、彼は大学創設の基金を集めたとのことである。

Dr Conwell travelled all across the United States telling this story many times and attracted enormous audiences. Charging a small admission fee for his public appearances, he told the story long enough to raise the money to start his college for poor, but deserving students. Over time, he raised nearly six million dollars which in today’s money approximately 3,000,000,000 yen.

　ラッセル・コンウェルをネットで検索したら、ウィキペディアに、次のような逸話が掲載されていた。感動的な話なので、次に引用しておこう。

Reverend Conwell used the story of Hattie May Wiatt and her 57 cents to spur phenomenal fundraising to build a new church. Hattie May lived nearby, and she and other children were gathered outside when Conwell walked up one Sunday morning. Conwell carried Hattie May on his shoulders and sat her in a corner in the back. When he ran into her walking the streets one day, he told her not to worry that one day they'd build a new church so all the children could come in. Hattie May died at six years of age. When she died from diphtheria, she had saved 57 cents to contribute to the cause. The girl's mother told Reverend Conwell that Hattie May had been saving money to help build a bigger church and gave him the coins. Reverend Conwell had the 57 cents turned into 57 pennies, told the congregation the story of little Hattie May, and auctioned the pennies for a return of about $250. In addition, 54 of the 57 pennies were returned to Reverend Conwell, and he later put them up on display.
