脳についての誤った考え (Wrong Concepts about Human Brain)

2016年実施の慶応大学 (商学部) 英語入試問題には、人間の脳について誤った考えを指摘する英文が取り上げられている。
一番目の誤った考えは、人はある一定の期間を過ぎると、脳は変化しないというものである。
Most of us have heard about the critical learning period, the early years of life when the vast majority of the brain's development is thought to occur. After this period, according to the assumption, human development is more or less fixed.
(訳) 私たちのほとんどは、重大な学習期間について聞いたことがある。それは圧倒的大部分の脳の発達が起こると考えられている幼少期のことである。その期間をすぎると、その仮定によれば、人間の脳の発達は多少とも固定される。
しかしこれは誤った考えで、最近の研究では、大人になっても人間の脳には可塑性 (plasticity) があると証明されている。
Recent research indicates that experience changes both the brain's physical structure and its functional organization―a phenomenon described as neuro-plasticity or mental flexibility.
(訳) 最近の研究は、経験が脳の物理的構造と機能的組織の両方を変化させると、指摘している。神経の可塑性あるいは知能の柔軟性と表現されている現象のことである。
二番目の誤った考えは、いつも脳は一部が働いて、他の部分は働いていないという考えである。
A recent European survey discovered that nearly 50 percent of teachers surveyed accept the idle brain theory, a belief that large parts f the brain are unused at any given moment.
(訳) 最近のヨーロッパの研究は、調査されたほとんど 50 パーセントの教師が、「怠ける頭脳の理論」を受け入れていることを明らかにした。その理論とは、脳の大部分はいつもは使用されていないという信念である。
これも最近の研究では、脳はいつも全体が働いていることが証明されている。
However, recent studies have shown that, regardless of what a person is doing, the entire brain generally active. The implication is that people learn new ideas and skills, not by tapping into unused parts of the brain, but by forming stronger connections between already existing associations.
(訳) しかしながら、最近の研究は、人が何をしていようと、脳全体は概して活発に働いていることを示した。その意味は、脳の使用されていない部分を活用するのではなく、すでに存在する結合をより強くすることで、人が新しい考えや技術を学んでいるということである。
三番目の誤った考えは、右脳人間と左脳人間が存在するという理論である。
Almost everyone has encountered the theory that people are either analytic (left brained) or creative (right brained).
(訳) ほとんどすべての人は、人間には分析的な人間 (左脳人間) と 創造的な人間 (右脳人間) がいるという理論に出くわしたことがある。
人間の右脳と左脳は密接に関連しているので、分けて考えることは間違っている。
The two hemispheres of the brain are linked and communicate extensively; they do not work independently. The simplistic notion of a binary brain has led to the misconception that everyone has a preferred learning style.
(訳) 脳にある二つの半球は、結びついており、大規模に情報交換している。右脳と左脳は独立して働くわけではない。二つの脳という単純な考え方は、すべての人に優先される学習スタイルがあるという誤った考えに導いていく。
難しいことであるが、誤った情報には惑わされないことが重要である。特に、今日のようなインターネットが発達した時代には、フェイク・ニュースには十分注意したいものである。
